The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender has launched its new Community Assistance Program (CAP) using federally funded AmeriCorps members as Life Skills Advocates, and this Office has one remaining job opening for an enthusiastic, creative and highly committed individual with knowledge of community-based organizations, public agencies and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You must have a strong desire to help others in the community and work well independently. This Office must hire an individual for this position by March 31, 2005. The Public Defender has now hosted 19 AmeriCorps members who serve as full-time Life Skill Advocates (LSA). These Life Skill Advocates help Public Defender clients access substance abuse and mental health care, jobs, education, and housing. With this assistance, Public Defender clients can better turn their lives around and get a new perspective and a fresh start in life. Under the New Jersey Public Defender Community Assistance Program (CAP), these Life Skill Advocates are placed in Public Defender offices throughout New Jersey and work under a Public Defender attorney's direct supervision to develop client-specific community plans that link appropriate Public Defender clients to community resources and services. Funding is through the federal AmeriCorps program. Life Skills Advocates must make a one year commitment which can be renewed for a second year. Each individual will receive an annual living allowance of $10,197 and an educational grant of $4,725 for each year of their AmeriCorps service.
